Growl and Leopard Mail

Growl doesn't work by default under Leopard Mail.app, because of the revised plugin architecture. However, some simple terminal hackery will get it working for you (once you have the growmail bundle installed):

defaults write com.apple.mail EnableBundles -bool YES
defaults write com.apple.mail BundleCompatibilityVersion -int 3

  • Wow, thanks works great! I was worried I'd be without growl mail now that I have Leopard but thanks to you it works perfectly.

  • I did that on the terminal after installing growlmail, and then launched mail... and yes, i didn't get any error message.
But i don't get any notification on new mail!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at Tue Oct 30, 05:23:00 AM EST

  • As previous comment, no notification on new mail :/
Growmail appears on mail preference, but it's not working.

  • Doesn't work :(

  • Make sure growlmail is turned on both inside Mail.app AND inside Growl (in the system preferences).

    Works fine for me!

By Blogger stu willis, at Tue Oct 30, 11:40:00 PM EST

  • It is checked both in preferences and mail.
I know growl works because i can see the notifications adium makes.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at Wed Oct 31, 07:32:00 AM EST

  • Same thing for me.I have configured growl on both sides. Skype notifications works fine. But no notification for mail. I even enable notification on junk.
any idea how to make this works ?

  • I did the manips a few days ago, and it started to work today :s

I've just added a new account to mail (IMAP Gmail).

  • Really useful hint. You should submit it to MacOSXHints if you haven't already.
I also use Mail.appetizer. Which is a great program, but it seems it's no longer in development. Which is a shame.

  • Mark -- word from the Mail.appetizer developer is that he will be releasing an updated version as soon as he has a working Leopard system.

  • great, directly worked for me!!

Why isn't this posted on the official Growl forum?

  • Awesome. Worked for me.

Another tip that might help for those having trouble: just for safety, I made sure Mail was not running when I did the two defaults commands in Terminal.

By Anonymous j, at Sun Nov 18, 08:44:00 AM EST

  • I did the copy paste thing as well and it didn't work. any ideas?

By Blogger vordo, at Wed Nov 28, 07:53:00 AM EST

  • follow these steps
    install growl
    close apple mail
    install growl mail
    open terminal
copy both lines into terminal, press enter
    open mail

    everything works fine

By Anonymous Anonymous, at Sun Dec 16, 09:07:00 PM EST

  • thanks! first time it didn't work. then i quit mail. then i turned off growl, and then restarted it. then i copied the lines.

and now both mail.appetizer AND growl work :)

  • Anyone having crashing problems after this? Sometime after I enabled this my mail crashes randomly when I start it up, after I click any of the buttons on a "Mail cannot verify the identity of this [secured server]."

By Anonymous GreenCountry, at Wed Jan 02, 04:01:00 AM EST

  • This isn't working for me either unfortunately. DId all the steps. I can't seem to reinstall growl however since the author's site is down. Anyone know if he relocated his site or files?

By Blogger fhdogs, at Fri Jan 25, 06:46:00 AM EST

  • NICE... worked like a chahm, deah pally.

By Anonymous nebos, at Thu Feb 07, 06:40:00 AM EST

  • Nope.
i followed all the steps, but when starting Mail, it puts up a window saying:

    "Bundle Compatibility Warning
Mail has disabled the following installed bundles:
    GrowlMail

Please contact the makers of these bundles for a version compatible with Mac OS X 10.5 Mail before reinstalling them."

    Oh, well.
